Sports Event for Children

A sporting event for children was organized on 14th October by the Model Village Cell at Bhangedi Village. Around 30 students of the village participated from age group of 10 years to 13 years. Indira Gandhi National Disability Scheme

On the 13th of October, the students of RT awareness cell took up a rather distinct issue that is Indira Gandhi National Disability Scheme. The IGNDS is a scheme introduced by the government which benefits the physically disabled people below the age group of 64 years. There are many benefits through this scheme including a four hundred rupee stipend per month. Many physically challenged people of the village were not aware of this very useful government scheme and were informed about the procedure to apply for the scheme. Many people thanked the students to bring the existence of such a scheme to the knowledge of the people as it would come to their aid greatly.

Cleanliness Drive in the Campus

"Cleanliness is next to godliness" - Keeping this in mind, a mass cleanliness drive was organised on 14th October 2012 by the Environment cell of NSS, IIT Roorkee in the campus.
The students were made to assemble near Saraswati Mandir by 11:30 a.m. from where the drive commenced. Each student was provided with a pair of gloves and a poly bag to handle the garbage. Boys took the initiative of collecting the litters from roadside whereas the girls spread awareness with the help of posters having catchy slogans. From Saraswati Mandir, the drive went on to Saraswati Kunj and then headed towards the convocation hall, cleaning the roadside around Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium.

All sorts of trash including plastics, wrappers, empty packets, used bottles, papers etc were collected in separate bags. Students kept themselves involved in the activity showing great zeal and enthusiasm reflecting their feelings towards cleanliness..

There were no dustbins near the pavement close to Lal Bahadur Stadium due to which, a lot of garbage was found littered there. It could also be noticed that people were throwing garbage near the bins and not into the bins, showing their negligence to abide by the cleanliness rules and their laziness basically which made the surrounding look even worse there. The drive ended at the Department of Chemical Engineering and all poly bags along with gloves were disposed in the dustbin.
This event made everyone realize that "Improvement begins with 'I' ".It also made people to realize that their localities are also just like their homes and it's the people's own duty to make it look clean and not litter randomly. Moreover the participants of this drive are proud that they have inspired so many of the public who would have seen their activity on the way and would have got some inspiration to keep their own surrounding's also clean and if each one teaches one, then our planet can become a heavenly place to dwell in.

Motivational Session and Quiz for Children at Bhangedi Village

The event, which was organised in the Junior School, Bhangedi village on 30th September 2012, began on a warm note at 3:30 pm with an overwhelming participation of the local village children.
The event comprised of screening videos to teach and motivate the local village children followed by a quiz. The village children comprising of students from classes fourth to eighth were assembled in the main room of village school. The videos were followed by a discussion session in which the children participated with great enthusiasm. After each video the members of NSS Model Village gave the description of the videos as well as linked the message of the videos to their daily lives. They were also taught to follow the principles of never giving up, keeping the environment clean etc.
The video session was followed by an audio-visual quiz. The first few questions were related to the identification of freedom fighters like Chandrashekhar Azad and Subhash Chandra Bose from the relevant movie clips. Also some photographs of eminent personalities like Anna Hazare, Mahatma Gandhi, and Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishn were shown and were asked to identify them. The children participated actively in the quiz and the related discussions. Prizes in the form of stationery were also distributed to encourage the students.
The event was a very successful one with the children enjoying their holiday with fun-filled activities and at the same time having a great learning experience.

A MUST WATCH- Screening of "I AM KALAM"

In addition to educating young minds and helping them overcome their doubts in various subjects, Prerna Cell recently organized a movie screening for the students they teach on 2nd October at the Mandi cell. At 5.30 pm, the show for ‘I Am Kalam’ commenced.

It is a beautiful movie with even a more beautiful message. Once in a while, you come across a film that makes you a 'softer' person after just one watch. I Am Kalam, which revolves around seemingly impossible dreams of an 11 year old, is one such experience. Chhotu (Harsh Mayar) comes from a really poor family and works at his uncle Bhati's (Gulshan Grover) dhaba. At the outset, the story appears simple enough. But as it unfolds, deeper layers unfurl in the most magical way. Chhotu befriends Kuwar Ranvijay Singh (Hussan Saad). The rich prince suffers from loneliness until he meets Chhotu (flashing his trademark confident toothy grin) teaches him a few lessons, some obvious and some more subtle. While Chhotu's bullying and insecure colleague at the dhaba, Laptan (Pitobash) is a die-hard fan of Amitabh Bachchan, Chhotu has bigger aspirations. The kid is so inspired by former Indian President APJ Kalam that he confidently rechristens himself Kalam, thus explaining the title of the movie.
Among other things, the most impressive is the way in which a social message is pressed cleverly that a child's brilliance shines through even the dreariest of circumstances. And in direct contrast, a child can't be made happy by bestowing him with costly toys and other comforts.
The best thing about this movie is that it is happy, despite the grim reality of life it portrays. The positivity somehow manages to touch a chord. The central plot of the movie is in sync with the RTE Act and stands for thousands of such aspiring children. Privileged children get to know about the plight of their underprivileged counterpart and the gift of education that they have been bestowed with. At a time, when children seem bereft of the right idol to emulate, I Am Kalam shows the way.”I am Kalam” shows you how beautiful can small be. That sun always comes up after every dark night. That dreams can come true if your heart is at right place and your mind is glued in.

Special Lecture Series for Students in Prerna Class

Apart from their regular educational schedule, the Prerna cell has started a special lecture series for the students of classes 11th and 12th for strengthening their core concepts in Physics, Chemistry and Maths. A lecture of 2 hours is conducted every Sunday at Mandi Cell focussing on a single topic from the aforementioned subjects at a time. Under the programme, three successful lectures have been conducted till now, from one from each of the subjects. The first two lectures were held on the topics—Circuit Theory (Physics) and Vectors (Maths) by Tarun Gangwar (II year) and Tanuj Agrawal (III year) respectively which received a very good response from the students. The last lecture for the autumn semester was held on Valence Bond Theory (Chemistry) which too was highly successful. This initiative, in the long run will surely cater to the needs of the young minds of the surrounding towns and villages preparing for boards as well as the competitive exams and ensure that they can crack the exams to have a bright future.

Health Survey at Majra Village

A health survey was conducted on 30th September by the students of RT Awareness cell analyzing the medical facilities available in the Majra village.
The students showed their keen interest in the activity by going around the village inquiring about the health care facilities available to the people within their reach both geographically and financially. It was found that though many private clinics have been set up, people still prefer the government facilities because of financial reasons. What came to notice was that a lot of work still needs to be done to improve the medical facilities in the rural and inaccessible areas of the country.

Initial Surveying at Bhangedi Village

This year, the village opted by the Model Village Cell of NSS Chapter of IIT Roorkee was Bhangedi Village which is at a distance of 4km from IIT Roorkee Campus. The activities for the new session began on 23rd September 2012. The events included teaching and gaming activities for children, collection of water samples for pollution testing and a survey for tree plantation drive.
After reaching the village near Valmiki temple at morning 10.30 a.m, three groups were formed. The first group comprising of about ten people went to cover the whole village and collect water samples from the roadside hand pumps to be tested in civil department laboratory for any sort of pollution. The other group with about the same number of people surveyed the full village to identify suitable places for tree plantation and developed the map of the village with the identified places marked on it for reference on the day of tree plantation. Rest of the people stayed back in the Valmiki temple and taught the village children gathered in the temple for some time and later had a gaming session with them. All the activities embarked the new session for Model Village and laid down the path for further activities in the session and gave a chance to the members of the cell for a healthy interaction with the village community.

NSS Day Celebrations

It is very natural for an Institute of national importance like ours to broaden its vision and indulge in social service. NSS IIT Roorkee has been providing a remarkable service to the society. Since its beginning days during 1970s, 24th of September every year is celebrated as the NSS day all over India to mark its beginning in 1969.
This year at IIT Roorkee, as a special event for the day, students were asked to give a presentation on the very thought provoking topic, "Should social service be included in the course curriculum of the students?" and the best presentations were to be awarded. Senior members of the NSS, Arpit Mittal and Kanishk (Former Secretaries of NSS) presided over as the judges. The event, which was held in the convocation hall at 6.30pm, witnessed an excellent audience. A total of seven teams participated in the event.
Though all the teams seemed to support the idea that social service should be included in the curriculum, they differed in their arguments. The teams discussed social service at very different perspectives that the audience found it intellectually amusing. It will be very right to say that the presentations got the audience thinking. From history of social service to the various NGOs present in the country, the teams explored the length and breadth of social service. One of the notable performances was of Gunjal Singh and Parul Singh, with their sweet voices and influencing delivery, which bag the first prize in the competition. The team of Astha Khurana and Shivani Soni won the second prize, while Aman Gupta's team and Prakhar Agarwal's team shared the third place.

In between the presentations a really influential video of NSS work with the physically handicapped people of a nearby village, Khanjarapur was screened. The video portrayed emotionally the gratefulness of the handicapped people, who were given free treatment in Delhi. Then, Prof. Anjan Sil, the Program Officer of NSS, took the podium to give a small talk to influence the students to give even more importance to social service. Following him, Shashank Jha, a 2nd year member of NSS, gave an impressive presentation to brief the first year students about the various cells and activities of NSS IITR. As a conclusion to the event, the general secretary of NSS IIT-R, Kapil Suyal gave a thanking note to everyone present. At the end of the day, the event left the students to participate more actively in social service than they are presently. Thus, we can say that this event met its objectives with grace.

855 Donors 707 Units Of Blood and a grand success...

“If you donate money, you give food. But if you donate blood, you give Life.” Once again, highly motivated by the quote, NSS IIT Roorkee organized a Blood donation camp. Three Blood banks of Uttarakhand- IMA Dehradun, Himalayan Jolligrant, Dehradun & Civil Hospital, Roorkee participated in the event which was organized form 9 am - 4:30 pm. A total of 855 people including students, staff & faculty members came forward to donate. From them, 707 units of blood were collected, which was 40 units more than the last year. This amount of blood could save the lives of more than 2000 people.
Dr. Pradipta Banerjee, the esteemed director of IIT Roorkee inaugurated the event in the presence of many other dignitaries where he examined the facilities and the necessary arrangements. He was upbeat about the enthusiasm displayed by the students and particularly impressed by the screening of the voluntary donors at three different levels since it is not a usual site at student level blood donation camps. The IMA had been allotted the students’ ward while the other two hospitals had their equipment in the family ward. The donor first registered himself by filling up a general questionnaire which consisted of questions regarding the donor’s medical history, followed by e-registration, before passing through three levels of screening. At primary level his weight and blood pressure were measured after which his level of haemoglobin was tested. Finally a blood donation kit sponsored by NACO (National Aids Control Organization) was provided. The prospective donors were helped at every step by zealous student volunteers from the various cells of the NSS. After the blood donation the donors were provided with refreshments along with certificates and mementos of appreciation. Three well equipped ambulances, one each of the participating blood banks were there to handle any problems that could possibly arise during the donation.

People participated in the event with great zeal and fervor. According to Subash Shivang, a second year student, the cooperation and association of the organizers was unparalleled. When asked about the pain during the donation, he replied that it was nothing compared to the agony of the people suffering with shortage of blood during emergency. Another student, Ashish Ranjan, a first time donor, confessed to being a bit nervous beforehand but the friendly nature of the hospital staff and the volunteers made him feel confident. Similarly another donor Aman Shrivastav said “Blood donation is important as you and your family members can also invariably be on the receiving end”. Dr. Smita Jha, the program officer N.S.S attributed the success of a blood donation camp to hard work, proper management, student cooperation and most importantly motivation and persuasion. “Myths are to be removed on scientific, technical and emotional grounds and masses should be made to realize that people are dying due to lack of blood during emergencies. Management was extraordinary, facilities superb and student participation excellent...”she added.
Highly prevalent and deeply rooted myths about the degree of safety and the health of donor often act as a barrier among the people and their will to donate blood. But the motivational lecture at the IITR convocation hall on the previous evening had been able to allay most of the fears in the people regarding myths associated with it. Blood donation is safe and rather makes a person feel relaxed. It has been scientifically proven that regular blood donors have low cholesterol levels. With booming population and skyrocketing spread of diseases it is estimated that the requirements of blood would increase by 5% every year. Hence this noble cause needs to be encouraged, promoted and supported by all possible means.

Blood Donation Motivation Program

Before the big event, a motivational Seminar with esteemed doctors and professionals as guests was organised at the Convocation Hall in IIT-R. The objective of the event was to encourage the students to participate by donating blood in the Blood Donation Camp to be conducted the next day i.e. on Saturday, 22th September.
The event started with a skit performed by the students of IIT-R with the message of humanity and brotherhood, defining blood donation as a great deed of humanity with the lines – ‘Raktdaan k liye pehalwaan hona zaruri nai, insaan hona jaruri hai’. Dr. Neha Tyagi and Dr. Robin from Himalayan Institute Hospitals, Jollygrant said that the health of donor is important because while a safe donor gives life, an unsafe donor can infect the recipient. Any healthy human between 18 and 65 years of age can donate blood and can save three or more lives. They also talked about the taboos related to girls for blood donation. They added that if the young generation pledges and comes forward to donate blood, there will be no dearth of blood worldwide.
Spreading awareness on the subject, Dr. Sachin Sharma, IMA Dehradun, in his talk said that blood donation is good for our health as it regulates the cholesterol level and reduces heart related problems and is also good for oral health. The withdrawn blood volume is restored within 24 hours of donation. He also allayed other fears and misconceptions regarding blood donation. Further Dr. Supreet, Civil Hospital Roorkee, told about the facts and myths related to blood donation and encouraged the students to donate blood and make a difference in someone’s life. She also made the audience aware about truth behind the myths and misconceptions prevalent about blood donation among the masses like-deterioration of health after blood donation, theory about limited blood in the body, and excessive time consumption in the process of donation and a few others of them.
On a concluding note, Dr. Smita Jha, Program Officer - NSS IITR, encouraged the students to come forward for the noble cause with her magical words. The Seminar ended with a moving presentation highlighting the need for blood donation.

    SWADES Movie Screening

FULL HOUSE,” that’s exactly what the Bose auditorium of physics department cried on 25th January as it held a special screening of the movie Swades: We The People organized by RT Education (Disha). It was an effort to rekindle the feeling of patriotism among the students on the eve of Republic Day.

With Gandhism as its main theme, the movie brought its viewers close to humanitarian essentials, questioning the existence of the Panchayat System in the villages, debating the needs of an education system, need for working in unison and the utter poverty, cultural disbeliefs of people.

Though the movie revolved around topics of great concern and with a running time of more than three hours, it kept the students glued to their seats. The screening was not just aimed to educate the students about their country’s problems, but to remind about a responsibility, to act and make a difference.

    National Voters’ Day

ONE VOTE MAKES A DIFFERENCE. To sow this seed in the minds of the young voters, NSS organized a program on 24th January in Bose auditorium. The program started with screening of a video showing India’s rising power along with inspiring the audience to vote.

Thereafter, a short humorous skit was presented by NSS volunteers that focussed on corruption in our society and the tendency among youth to run away from India. It also highlighted the diminishing importance of Republic Day in students’ life.

The program was blessed with even Bollywood stars appealing to the masses to vote through a video followed by a quiz based on general knowledge of election process was organised for the students. It was aimed “to provide the unrepresented youth of the country an opportunity to give vent to their feelings and help them become a part of the political process”.

The program ended with the national anthem and a bright new dedication gleaming in their eyes.

    Origami Event by RT Education

“ART”, the expression of human creative skills and imaginations... A form of leisure in which human mind finds the most satisfaction… With the motive of bringing something innovative out of the children of DISHA classes, the RT Education cell of NSS IIT Roorkee organised an event on 21st and 22nd January 2012 at the C Class Club which was based on ORIGAMI”, a Japanese art of making objects with paper by merely folding it, without cutting or tearing.

A huge enthusiastic crowd of students gathered there and made several objects associating each one with their childhood and giving wings to their imagination.  A TULIP FLOWER, a PARTY HAT, a SAIL BOAT, a TWIRLING BIRD, a JUMPING FROG, a LADYBIRD, a BALL are few of the numerous objects that they made. The activity fostered their imagination. They thoroughly enjoyed and found origami to be a thrilling and informative experience.

The amount of endeavour and interest put in by the students of the village was highly appreciable and finally what came out of paper was sheer and spectacular.  This event of Origami, like other events of RT EDUCATION was based on the motive of inculcating imagination and invoking ideas in the highly perceptive minds of the children which is one of the most important and key-elements of Education. The event lived up to the NSS motive of bringing joy and imparting knowledge to the less fortunate ones and was a huge success.

    Cloth Collection Drive

On the morning of 7th January, the sun was shining high up in the sky sharing its warmth with the world. Well that’s not so true. It had rained that day and the wind was furious. But that didn’t dampen the spirits of the NSS volunteers. 7th January witnessed the annual, CLOTH COLLECTION DRIVE, organized by NSS, aimed at making the spine chilling winters a pleasant one for the poor.

    NSS Team after Cloth Collection

On 5th January, NSS had organized a publicity to spread awareness among the people for the need to donate their old clothes. Its success was visible when the volunteers went knocking on the doors of the neighborhood. They returned with bags and bags of clothes, an evidence of the existing humanity. “A smile of joy was seen on every face knowing that their clothes will clad new lives with warmth and love,” shared a volunteer. More than 1500 kg of clothes were collected which were then sorted according to age, size and gender, for easy distribution, into bags that stood tall and proud.
    Cloth Distribution

The following day the clothes were distributed not only within the four walls of IITR but a bus laden with clothes was even visible on the roads of Haridwar. Sadbhawna, Shiv Mandir Kust Ashram, Chandrasekher Azad Kust Ashram Samiti were a few places that were visited.

The love, disguised in the form of clothes, brought a priceless smile on the beautiful faces, which will be cherished by all.
